This formula is used for those with low resistance to acute illnesses (such as the common cold, influenza, allergies, virus infections, etc.). It helps to strengthen the immune system against these external influences, while at the same time warding off susceptibility to various and common acute illnesses. In the terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine we use this formula to strengthen the vital energy and to consolidate the exterior defensive system of the body. This suggested use is not FDA approved.

ASTRAGALUS, Huang Qi, Radix Astragali-strengthens the vital and defensive energy, antibacterial, strengthens immune system.
ATRACTYLODES, Bai Zhu, Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocephala-strengthens vital energy and defense system.
SILER, Fang Feng, Radix Ledbouriellae Sesloides/Radix Sileris-antibacterial/antiviral, strengthens defenses against acute illnesses.

ASTRAGALUS (Radix Astragali): This herb is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to strengthen the vital and defensive energy of the individual. It excites the central nervous system, and increases phagocytosis via the reticuloendothelial system. It has been shown to be antibacterial (inhibits the growth of staphylococci, hemolytic streptococci, pneumococci, Corynebacterium diptheriae, and Bacillus sysenteriae). It has been shown to increase humoral immunity, to increase the production of plasma cell antibodies and macrophages. In Chinese terms we use Huang Qi to strengthen the vital Qi of the spleen and lungs.

ATRACTYLODES (white) (Rhizoma Atractylodis Macrocehalae): Increases digestive juices and enzymes, sedative, anti-bacterial, diuretic. When mice were given extracts of this herb there was an increase in endurance as measured by the swimming test. In Traditional Chinese Medicine Bai Zhu strengthens the spleen, tonifies the Qi, and stabilizes the exterior.

SILER (Radix Ledbouriellae Sesloides/Radix Sileris): Reduces fever. Anti microbial; has an inhibitory effect on some influenza viruses, Shigella spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Staphylococcus aureus. In Traditional Chinese Medicine Siler is used to release the exterior and expel exterior attacks (the Chinese term for acute illnesses).
