This formula has a sedative and tranquilizing effect. In the terms of Traditional Chinese Medicine, the herbs which make up this formula nourish the heart (the home of the Spirit) and settle and calm the Spirit. It is used to treat symptoms such as insomnia, irritability, restless sleep with excessive dreaming, anxiety, restlessness, and emotional distress. ZIZYPHUS, Suan Zao Ren, Semen Ziziphi Spinosae-analgesic, sedative, reduces abnormal sweating.
BIOTA, Bai Zi Ren, Semen Biotae Orientalis-calms the Spirit.
POLYGALA, Yuan Zhi, Radix Polygalae Tenuifoliae-calms the Spirit, strengthens the blood.
ACORUS, Shi Chang Pu, Rhizoma Acori Graminei-sedative.
DRAGON BONE, Long Gu, Os Draconis-sedative, high in Calcium.
OYSTER SHELL, Mu Li, Cancha Ostreae-sedative,high in Calcium.
LICORICE, Gan Cao, Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis-harmonizes the function of all the herbs in the formula.

ZIZYPHUS (Semen Ziziphi Spinosae): Has a hypnotic and sedative effect when given orally to dogs and mice. Analgesic effect; intraperitoneal injection of aqueous extract has a definite analgesic effect in mice as measured by sensitivity to heat. No toxicity. In Traditional Chinese Medicine this herb is used to nourish the heart and calm the spirit as well as to prevent abnormal sweating (spontaneous sweats and night sweats).

BIOTA (Semen Biotae Orientalis): No significant pharmacological research available. In Traditional Chinese Medicine this herb is used to nourish the heart and calm the spirit as well as to prevent night sweats.

CAULIS POLYGALA MULTIFLORI (Radix Polygalae Tenuifoliae): There has been no significant pharmacological or clinical research performed with this herb. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is used to nourish the heart and calm the spirit as well as to strengthen the blood quality.

DRAGON BONE (Os Draconis): Contains high amounts of calcium carbonate and calcium phosphate; calcium is known to be a relaxant to muscles and the central nervous system. The Chinese have traditionally used Long Gu to settle and calm the spirit as well as to ease the function of the liver.

ACORUS (Rhizoma Acori Graminei): Sedative effect; the volatile oils decrease the free movements of mice and decrease the excitatory effects of ephedrine on the central nervous system. The Chinese have traditionally used Long Gu to settle and calm the spirit as well as to ease the function of the liver.

OYSTER SHELL (Oyster Shell): Contains high amounts of calcium carbonate, calcium phosphate, calcium sulfate and magnesium; these minerals are known to be relaxants to the muscles and central nervous system. Mu Li settles and calms the spirit and prevents excessive perspiration.

LICORICE (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis): Glucocorticoid effect; increases both the duration and strength of the effects of cortisone. Anti-allergic effect; reduces anaphylactic and skin reaction of guinea pigs to albumen. Anti-gastrointestinal ulcer effect in trial subjects is present in 90% of those studied. Lowers cholesterol and stops progression of lesions in rats. In clinical experiments this herb significantly reduces the toxic effects of many substances (strychnine, cocaine, urethane, etc.). Licorice is present in many herbal formulas to harmonize and equalize the function of the herbs in the formula.
