SMILAX, Tu Fu Ling, Rhizoma Smilacis Glabrae -clears heat, redness, inflammation, itching and oozing from the skin. ATRACTYLODES, Cang Zhu, Rhizoma Atractylodis-clears heat, redness, inflammation, itching and oozing from the skin. MOUTAN, Mu Dan Pi, Cortex Moutan Radicis-antibacterial, clears heat, redness, inflammation, itching and oozing from the skin.
REHMANNIA, Sheng Di Huang, Radix Rehmanniae Glutinosae-clears heat, redness, inflammation, itching and oozing from the skin.
SILER, Fang Feng, Radix Ledebouriellae Sesloides-antibacterial, reduces skin itch.
CICADA, Chan Tui, Periostracum Cicadae-treats skin conditions, reduces skin itch.
GYPSUM, Shi Gao, Calcium Sulfate-clears heat, redness and inflammation of skin conditions.
ARCTIUM, Niu Bang Zhi, Fructus Arctii Lappae-antibacterial, clears heat, redness, inflammation, itching and oozing of skin conditions.

POLYGONUM, Bian Xu, Herba Polygoni Avicularis-clears heat, redness, inflammation, itching and oozing from the skin.

SMILAX (Smilacis Glabrae Rhizoma): This herb is used to clear damp from the skin in Traditional Chinese Medicine. Damp skin conditions are those with heat, redness, itching and oozing.

ATRACTYLODES (Rhizoma Atractylodis): The Chinese have traditionally used Cang Zhu to clear dampness, which can be a cause of skin eruptions. Gastric perfusion of its liquid extract increases the excretion of sodium and potassium in rats without diuresis.

MOUTAN (Cortex Moutan Radicis): This herb has been shown to have an anti microbial effect, in vitro, against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Salmonella typhi. Intravenous injections lower blood pressure in dogs, cats, rats, and humans. It has been shown to decrease the body temperature in both normal mice and in those in which a fever has been artificially induced. Oral ingestion has been shown to be tranquilizing, hypnotic, analgesic. In Traditional Chinese Medicine Mu Dan Pi is used to cool hot blood which can cause erysipelas, purpuric rashes, various skin eruptions and itching.

REHMANNIA (Radix Rehmanniae Glutinosae): Decoctions of Sheng Di Huang taken orally have been successful in treating eczema. The Chinese use the herb to cool the blood which benefits various types of skin eruptions.

SILER (Radix Ledebouriellae Sesloides ): Fang Feng has a moderate antipyretic effect when taken orally. It is anti microbial against some influenza viruses as well as bacteria such as Shigella spp., Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphylococcus aureus. In Traditional Chinese Medicine Fang Feng is used to treat various forms of the initial stages of acute illness such as the common cold, viral illmesses, etc. It is commonly used in formulas to decrease the itch if skin affections.

CICADA (Periostracum Cicadae): In Traditional Chinese Medicine this herb is used to clear wind which is present in all skin eruptions.

GYPSUM (Calcium Sulfate): The Chinese use this herb to clear heat and quell fire; it is present in formulas which treat skin eruptions.

ARCTIUM (Fructus Arctii Lappae): This herb has been shown to have an antibiotic effect against Streptococcus pneumoniae and many pathogenic fungi. In Chinese terms it detoxifies fire poison which leads to a variety of skin eruptions.

PHELLODENDRUM (Cortex Phellodendri): The major antibiotic ingredient of this herb is berberine. In Chinese Medicine it is used to clear damp heart, drain fire, and detoxify fire poison; all these conditions generate inflammatory skin conditions.

TANG-KUEI (Radix Angelica Sinensis): Gyncologically this herb has been shown to normalize the contractions of the uterus. In vitro it is antibiotic against many bacteria including hemolytic Streptococcus and Shigella. It has a mild sedative effect on the central nervous system. In Traditional Chinese Medicine Dang Gui is used to move the blood; this is an important function when used with other herbs which cool the blood in skin eruption formulas.

LITHOSPERM (Radix Lithospermi seu Arnebiae): Zi Cao is antibiotic in vitro against various viruses and bacteria including Staphylcoccus aureus. The Chinese use it to clear heat, cool the blood, detoxify fire poison, and clear damp heat in the skin. All of these functions make it useful for skin eruptions.

POLYGONUM (Herba Polygoni Avicularis): Bian Xu has a diuretic effect in rats. Injections lower blood pressure when in cats, rabbits, and dogs. It has an in vitro inhibitory effect against many pathogenic fungi. In Traditional Chinese Medicine this herb is used to clear damp heat as well as to stop itching; it is used in damp heat skin conditions with itching.
