LEONURUS (Herba Leonuri Heterophylli): This herb has been shown in scientific experiments to have a significant action on the uterus; it stimulates uterine contraction. Intravenous injection of water extracts of Yi Mu Cao lowers blood pressure for a short period of time. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is used to move the blood and regulate the menses. It is useful in irregular menstruation as well as premenstrual abdominal pain and menstrual cramps. Its purpose in this formula is to move the blood enough that the herbs to stop bleeding in this formula do not cause stuck or stagnant blood.
GELATIN (Gelatinum Asini): A Jiao has been shown to significantly increase the production of red blood cells and hemoglobin in dogs with post-partum anemia. Animal experiments demonstrated that A Jiao increases the absorption and utilization of calcium carbonate. The Chinese use this herb to nourish the blood and stop bleeding; it is especially useful in excessive menstrual or uterine bleeding. This herb is a blood and yin tonic, nutritive, hemostatic, and demulcent.
ECLIPTA (Herba Ecliptae Prostratae): In Traditional Chinese Medicine Han Lian Cao is used to cool the blood and stop bleeding. It is used to cure bleeding caused by heat in the blood. The properties of this herb are yin tonic, alterative, astringent and hemostatic.
KAOLIN (Halloysitum Rubrum): Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to astringe the blood and stop bleeding of the uterus and large intestine.
AGRIMONY (Herba Agimoniae Pilosae): This herb has been shown to have a hemostatic effect. Numerous animal experiments have shown a decrease in bleeding time as well as peripheral vasoconstriction. In powder form it has been studied as a hemostatic in surgery; in 20 surgical cases bleeding was stopped in 1-2 minutes. In experiments with rabbits low concentrations caused vasoconstriction, while high concentrations cause vasodilation. In Chinese Medicine it is used as an astringent to stop bleeding. It is one of the most effective stop-bleeding herbs in the Chinese herbal pharmacy and is used in vomiting of blood, expectoration of blood from the lungs, nosebleed, bleeding gums, blood in the urine, as well as uterine bleeding. It can be used in combination with various other hemostatic herbs for all types of bleeding in the body. It is an astringent, hemostatic, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic.
CYPERUS (Rhizoma Cyperi Rotundi): Xiang Fu has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on the pregnant and non pregnant uterus of experimental animals, and its volatile oils contain an estrogen-like substance. The Chinese use it to regulate menstruation (dysmenorrhea or irregular menstruation) and reduce menstrual pain by smoothing the flow of live Qi. It is also useful in this formula to prevent the stop bleeding herbs from creating a side effect of stagnant Qi and blood. Its properties are those of carminitive, antispasmodic, and emmenagogue.
LICORICE (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis): Gan Cao is one of the most thoroughly researched herbs in the materia medica. Among its many effects are those of mineralcorticoid (aldosterone-like action), glucocorticoid (increases both the duration and strength of cortisone), anti-inflammatory, anti-asthmatic, anti-allergic, anti-ulcer, anti-cholesterol, anti-neoplastic, and detoxifying. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is used to moderate and harmonize the characteristics of the other herbs in many formulas, and that is its function here. It is a Qi tonic, expectorant, demulcent, aperient, and mild sedative.
CODONOPSIS (Radix Codonopsis Pilosulae): Dang Shen has been shown in normal rabbits to increase the red blood cell count and hemoglobin, and in dogs to lower blood pressure. In Chinese Medicine it is used to tonify the function of the spleen which is an important organ in the production and control of the blood. Certain types of excess bleeding conditions can be due to deficient spleen patterns. It is a Qi tonic, demulcent, and expectorant.
ASTRAGALUS (Radix Astragali): Intravenous injections of Huang Qi into dogs, cats, and rabbits significantly lowered blood pressure. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is used to tonify the Qi of the spleen as well as to strengthen the blood. Like Codonopsis, spleen tonification results in control of bleeding disorders. It is a Qi tonic, diuretic, and anhydrotic (stops sweating).
MADDER (Radix Rubiae Cordifoliae): The Chinese use Qian Cao Gen to cool the blood and stop bleeding of all kinds. At the same time it moves the blood and treats stuck blood conditions. .
