LONICERA (Flos Lonicerae Japonicae): Anti microbial (has a strong inhibitory effect in vitro against many pathogenic bacteria including Salmonella typhi, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae). It has been shown to deactivate certain strains of influenza virus. Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat a wide variety of viral and bacterial infections and febrile states.
FORSYTHIS (Fructus Forsythiae Suspensae): Anti viral and anti-microbial (has a broad anti microbial spectrum similar to Lonicera. Lonicera is more effective against Salmonella typhi and hemolytic Streptococcus, while Forsythia has greater inhibitory effect against Shigella spp. and Staphylococcus aureus.) Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat a wide variety of viral and bacterial infections and febrile states.
PLATYCODON (Radix Platycodi Grandiflori): Demonstrated in cats and dogs to be a strong expectorant. Anti fungal against many common dermatomycoses. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is useful for the elimination of pus and for the treatment of throat inflammation.
ARCTIUM (Fructus Arctii Lappae): Antibiotic effect against Streptococcus pneumoniae and many pathogenic fungi. In Traditional Chinese Medicine this herb is used for throat inflammation, abscess and tonsillitis.
BAPHICACAN (Folium Daqingye): Anti microbial against Salmonella typhi, Staph. aureus, Neisseria meningitidis, Bacillus subtilis, hemolytic Streptococcus, sarcina, C. diptheriae, E. coli, E. typhi, B. paratyphi, Shigella and leptospirosis. Reports state that Baphicacan has been shown to be very effective in the treatment of encephalitis B. A study showed that only 10% of the group that took this herb daily had upper respiratory infections during the study period, compared to 24% of the control group (anti-viral). In studies involving 300 patients, Baphicacan was found to be very effective in acute dysentery and gastroenteritis. Increases the phagocytosis of white blood cells. Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for throat inflammation, mumps, influenza, and any febrile disease.
LASIOSPHAERA (Frucification Lasiosphaerae): Antibacterial for Staph. aureus, pseudomonas, proteus and Streptococcus pneumoniae. Hemostatic effective in stopping hemorrhages (in one series of 467 cases the success rate was 98%). Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat throat inflammation, hoarseness, and nosebleeds.
SUBPROSTRATAE (Radix Sophorae Subprostratae): Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat throat inflammation (swollen and painful throat).
BELAMCANDA (Rhizoma Belamcandae Chinensis): Anti fungal and anti viral. In vitro demonstrated to have inhibitory effects against many dermatomycoses. In vitro effect against many viruses that are pathogenic in pharyngitis. Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine as an anti-inflammatory in cases of acute sore throat, tonsillitis, and laryngitis.
SCUTELLARIA (Radix Scutellariae Biscalensis): Antibiotic effect is broad spectrum (against Staphylococcus aureus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Neisseria meningitidis. Was shown to be effective in 100 people with bacillary dysentery. Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat a wide range of infections.
ISATIS (Radix Isatidis seu Baphicicanthi): Antimicrobial in a broad spectrum manner against Shigella dysenteriae, Shigella flexneri, Salmonella, Streptococcus. Anti viral; in one study of over 11,000 people the use of this herb forestalled the epidemic nature of mumps. It has also shown to be effective in the treatment of acute infectious hepatitis. Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine for all infections of the throat.
LICORICE (Radix Glycyrrhizae Uralensis): Mild anti inflammatory effect. Used in many formulas in Traditional Chinese Medicine to moderate and harmonize the characteristics of all the herbs in the formula.
