ANGELICA, Bai Zhi, Radis Angelicae-antibacterial, opens nasal passages, reduces swelling, expels pus, and directs the function of the other herbs in the formula to the nose area. ANEMARRHENA, Zhi Mu, Radix Anemarrhenae Asphodeloides-antibacterial, clears heat and infection. GARDENIA, Zhi Zi, Fructus Gardeniae Jasminoides-antibacterial, clears inflammation from the organs of the face. GYPSUM, Shi Gao, Calcium Sulfate-clears heat and fever from all respiratory organs. LYCIUM BARK, Di Gu Pi, Cortex Lycii Chinensis Radicis-reduces fever and heat from the respiratory organs. MOUTAN, Mu Dan Pi, Cortex Moutan Radicis-antibacterial, reduces swelling, drains pus. OPHIOPOGON, Mai Men Dong, Tuber Ophiopogonis Japonici-antibacterial, clears heat and fever, protects body fluids.
ANGELICA (Radix Angelicae): This herb has been shown to have an antimicrobial effect in vitro against Shigella and Salmonella. In Chinese Medicine it is used to treat the initial stages of a number of acute illnesses, as well as to open the nasal passages. It reduces swelling and expels pus as well. GARDENIA (Fructus Gardeniae Jasminoidis): The antibiotic effect of this herb in vitro extends to many pathogenic tinea and fungal organisms. Zhi Zi is used by the Chinese to clear heat and fever patterns; it clears damp heat from the channels of the face, affecting the nose and eyes. Properties: alterative, antipyretic, hemostatic, stomachic.
GYPSUM (Calcium Sulfate): Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to clear heat and fever, especially from the lungs and related respiratory organs. Properties: antipyretic, antiphlogistic, vulnerary.
LYCIUM BARK (Cortex Lycii Chinensis Radicis): This herb is antipyretic and reduces fever/ heat, especially from the lungs and related organs. Properties: antipyretic.
MOUTAN (Cortex Moutan Radicis): This herb has a strong in vitro inhibitory influence on many pathogenic bacteria including Staph aureus, Bacillus subtilis, and Salmonella typhi. In Chinese Medicine it is used to clear heat and cool the blood as well as to drain pus and swelling. Properties: antipyretic.
OPHIOPOGON (Tuber Ophiopogonis Japonici): In Traditional Chinese Medicine Mai Men Dong clears heat in febrile illnesses that injures yin and body fluids. Properties: nutritive, demulcent, expectorant, antipyretic. Topical application inhibits Staphylococcus aureus and E. coli.
