REHMANNIA, Sheng Di Huang, Radix Rehmanniae Glutinosae- clears heat, moistens dry conditions. CORNUS, Shan Zhu Yu, Fructus Corni Officinalis-moistens dry conditions. DIOSCOREA, Shan Yao, Radix Dioscorea Opposita-moistens dry conditions, specifically moistens lungs. HOELEN, Fu Ling, Sclerotium Poriae Cocos-regulates the proper distribution of fluids throughout the body; aids digestion and absorption of the herbs in this formula. MOUTAN, Mu Dan Pi, Cortex Moutan Radicis-aids in the proper digestion and absorption of this formula, cools lung heat. ALISMA, Ze Xie, Rhizoma Alismatis Plantago-aquatica-aids the digestion and absorption of herbs in the formula. SCHISANDRA, Wu Wei Zi, Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis-strengthens lungs, stimulates respiration.
REHMANNIA (Radix Rehmanniae Glutinosae): This herb is used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to clear heat and cool the blood. It also nourishes the blood of the body in general and is therefore used in all formulas which treat conditions involving dryness. CORNUS (Fructus Corni Officinalis): Shan Zhu Yu is used by the Chinese to stabilize the kidneys and contain the essence (the essence being the vital fluids in the body) when preservation is needed to aid in restoration of fluids.
DIOSCOREA (Radix Dioscoreae Oppositae): This herb benefits the lungs and nourishes the kidneys, in this way it moistens both organs and resolves symptoms caused by dryness.
HOELEN (Sclerotium Poriae Cocos): Decoctions made from Fu Ling have a diuretic effect in rabbits, rats, people, and dogs. It is used in Chinese Medicine to clear excess fluids and dampness from the body. In this formula it is used to help with the digestion of the other tonifying herbs present as well as to tonify the function of the Spleen which, in Chinese Medicine, is largely responsible for the proper distribution of the fluids of the body.
MOUTAN (Cortex Moutan Radicis): Used to clear heat and cool the blood. Mu Dan Pi in this formula is used to aid in the digestion of the tonifying herbs.
ALISMA (Rhizome Alismatis Plantago-aquaticae): Ze Xie is used in this formula to promote the digestion of the herbs which tonify the body fluids, as these can sometimes cause flatulence and bloating on their own.
SCHIZANDRA (Fructus Schisandrae Chinensis): In Chinese Medicine this herb goes to the lungs and retains the health of this organ. It has been shown to stimulate respiration through direct effect on the central nervous system. Wu Wei Zi contains adaptogens which regulate various body functions and increase the stress tolerance.
OPHIOPOGON (Tuber Ophiopogonis Japonici): Mai Men Dong moistens the lungs by nourishing the yin fluids. It also clears heat in the lungs (heat dries the fluids therefore causing dry coughs). Properties: yin tonic, nutritive, demulcent, expectorant, antipyretic. |
