APRICOT SEED (Semen Pruni Armeniacae): The use of Xing Ren in 124 cases of bronchitis showed cures in 23 cases and significant improvement in 66 others. In Traditional Chinese Medicine this herb is used to relieve coughs and stop wheezing.
ASTER (Radix Asteris Tatarici): Preparations of Aster have a significant expectorant effect in experiments on dogs and rats. It has an in vitro inhibitory effect on several bacteria including Shigella sonnei, E. Coli, Vibrio proteus, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The Chinese use this herb to relieve cough of various kinds as well as to expel phlegm.
BAMBOO (shavings) (Caulis Bambusae in Taeniis): Powdered Zhu Ru has inhibitory effects against Staphylococcus aureus, E. Coli, and Salmonella typhi, in vitro. Traditionally it is used to clear hot (colored) thick phlegm, or chest tightness, or bloody sputum.
ERIOBOTRYA (Folium Eriobotryae Japonicae): Treatment of bronchitis was studied in 167 cases with short-term control in 42 cases and improvement in another 60 cases. It was most effective as a cough suppressant, and least effective as an expectorant and as an anti-asthmatic. No side effects were reported. Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to expel phlegm, clear infection, and suppress cough.
FRITILLARIA (Bulbus Fritillariae Thunbergii): This herb contains peimine, which has a marked bronchodilatory effect on cat or rabbit bronchial specimens in a manner similar to atropine. The Chinese use it to clear yellow/green sputum and to fight lung infections of all kinds.
LONICERA (Flos Lonicerae Japonica): Anti-microbial (has a strong inhibitory effect in vitro against many pathogenic bacteria including Salmonella typhi, Pseucomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, and Streptococcus pneumoniae.) It has been shown to deactivate certain strains of influenza virus. Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat a wide variety of viral and bacterial infections and febrile states.
MORUS BARK (Cortex Mori Albae Radicis): In pharmacological studies Sang Bai Pi has been shown to be diuretic, antihypertensive, and tranquilizing. In Chinese Medicine it alleviates cough and wheezing and removes heat from the lung.
PEUCEDANUM (Radix Peucedani): Scientific studies show that Qian Hu increases the production of sputum in the respiratory tract. In Chinese Medicine it is used to direct lung Qi downward (in coughs rebellious lung Qi goes upward) and to expel phlegm. It is also used to quell all acute conditions.
SCUTELLARIA (Radix Scutellariae Baicalensis): Antibiotic effect is broad spectrum (against Staphylococcus aureus, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Streptococcus pneumoniae, and Neisseria meningitides). Was shown to be effective in 100 people with bacillary dysentery. Used in Traditional Chinese Medicine to treat a wide variety of infections, one of the most common being bacterial infections of the respiratory tract.
STEMONA (Radix Stemonae): Bai Bu has been shown in vitro to inhibit the growth of many pathogenic bacteria, including Streptococcus pneumoniae, B-hemolytic Streptococcus, Neisseria meningitides, and Staphylococcus aureus. In a clinical series of over 100 patients Bai Bu showed 85% effectiveness in the treatment of pertussis. In another study Bai Bu did not significantly decrease coughing induced by intrapleural injection of iodine in cats. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it is used to moisten the lung and alleviate both acute and chronic coughs. In this formula it is used to treat cough while at the same time protecting the lung from the excessive drying qualities of some of the other herbs present in this formula.
TRICHOSANTHES PEEL (Pericarpium Trichosanthis): Guo Luo Pi is used in Chinese Herbal Medicine to clear heat and yellow/green mucus in the lung, while at the same time moisturizing dryness in the entire respiratory tract. It relieves chest pain and oppression that frequently accompanies lung infections. Clinical research shows the fruit of this herb to have an antibiotic effect in vitro against E. Coli, Shigella sonnei, and Pseudomonas, as well as several dermatomycoses. Used for coronary artery disease in 25 people, there was improvement in the symptoms and EKGs in over 20 participants.
